The Challenge
The Agency for Roads and Traffic wants to assess the safety and longevity of its existing civil engineering works and infrastructure.
The Solution
Arcadis carries out visual inspections and condition measurements on around 100 viaducts and bridges in Flanders.
The Impact
This information allows AWV to perform efficient and economical infrastructure management and improve the safety and longevity of its viaducts and bridges.

The Challenge
The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) manages around 7,000 km of regional roads and motorways and more than 7,700 km of cycle paths. Every day, they work with a number of different partners to improve mobility. They are responsible for the design, construction and improvement of roads and bridges, the implementation of mobility policy and the organization of traffic. All civil engineering works and infrastructure are inspected regularly to ensure their safety and longevity.
The Solution
Arcadis was appointed by AWV as a consultancy firm for a period of one year to assist our departments in inspecting the bridges they manage. The assignment consists, on the one hand, of inspecting various bridges using iASSET, an asset management tool selected by the Flemish Government. We also help prepare maintenance measures for the repair of these civil engineering works.
Arcadis has been involved for decades in the realization, maintenance and management of various civil engineering works, including bridges. For this project, we have joined forces with our colleagues from Arcadis Netherlands.
The Impact
Transport infrastructure is indispensable in our society and central to a good quality of life. It is essential to manage and maintain this infrastructure to avoid poor performance and unnecessary costs. Our inspectors and engineers support AWV in the asset management for their civil engineering works. Regular inspections make it possible to take appropriate measures in good time and ensure safety and longevity.
