Charleroi, BELGIUM - The design and consulting firm Arcadis and the architect DDS+ have been nominated at the MIPIM-Awards in the "Best Shopping Centre" category for the Rive Gauche shopping centre in Charleroi.
Every year, the MIPIM (the number one exhibition for real estate professionals) hands out several awards in different categories during the exhibition. These are prestigious awards, and take into account votes placed by real estate professionals present at the MIPIM. The Charleroi Rive Gauche project is nominated in the "Best shopping centre" category. The results will be made known on the 15th of March.
Rive Gauche first opened last year. This new shopping and residential complex in the very heart of Charleroi embellishes the urban landscape and invigorates the local economy. This ambitious project contributes to the appeal and economic development of the city of Charleroi. It goes beyond a mere real estate development project by providing an entirely new district with a significant social impact, which is a key criterion for the 2018 MIPIM event.
Thanks to the Rive Gauche complex, the city boasts new pedestrian zones, 35,000 m2 of shops, a luxury hotel, a youth hostel, various accommodation, and a large number of restaurants, cafés and bars. The heart of the fourth largest city in Belgium will vibrate to the rhythm of these new activities. Residents and visitors will discover a new Charleroi that has become a city with an economic hub, a space for leisure activities and a centre for gastronomy. The name "Rive Gauche" was chosen with reference to the famous Rive Gauche district in Paris.
The Rive Gauche shopping complex in Charleroi includes new apartment buildings and also incorporates buildings registered on the city's local architectural and cultural heritage listings. The avant-garde "Piano de Heug" building, built in 1933, has been preserved and the "Passage de la Bourse", a typical 19th-century neoclassical arcade, is home to luxury shops and stores.
Arcadis is proud to have taken part in the materialisation of this development project, by providing its expertise to obtain the building permits and by overseeing the design activities in line with the recommendations in force: optimising energy performance, civil engineering, building services and equipment (HVAC and mechanical, electrical and sanitary installations), calls for tenders, and works monitoring.
The project owner of the Rive Gauche project is Saint Lambert Promotion.
