JUN 05, 2020 | Press Release

Arcadis Singapore is now carbon neutral with plans to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030

  • Arcadis has achieved carbon neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and offsetting remaining emissions
  • Announcement marks Arcadis’ commitment to becoming more sustainable
  • Arcadis has invested in a REDD+ project in Keo Seima, Cambodia to help conserve the rainforest, in turn reducing GHG emissions from avoided deforestation and degradation

[5 June 2020] Arcadis today announced that their Singapore operations has gone carbon neutral on 29 May 2020. This was achieved by reducing its carbon emissions and offsetting the remaining emissions. Arcadis Singapore aims to reduce its current carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. While the current COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an acute reduction of carbon emissions, Arcadis is committed to implement solutions to sustain emission reductions over the long term, keeping to its global commitment to becoming more sustainable.

Arcadis began tracking the Singapore office’s environmental footprint in 2016 and has from 2018 to 2019, achieved a 43% reduction in electricity and an 8.9% reduction in business travel due mainly to incorporating sustainable designs in office renovation and encouraging sustainable practices such as telecommuting.

To achieve carbon neutrality, Arcadis has invested in a REDD+ project in Keo Seima, Cambodia, to protect the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest remaining primary forests in Cambodia. The purchase of carbon credits from the project finances park management and supports alternative livelihoods for the communities living in the 130,000-hectare buffer zone around the park. This in turn reduces emissions through avoided deforestation and degradation.

Tim Risbridger, Head of Singapore at Arcadis, said:

“At Arcadis, we recognize our responsibility in tackling some of the biggest challenges facing our world and future generations. This extends beyond the work we do with our clients to the choices we make about how we work and manage our own operations. This is not an easy task, but I am incredibly proud of the commitment from our team in Singapore who made this possible, each taking actions of their own to be more sustainable. We hope this will be an inspiration for others as we see an increasing number of businesses focused on lowering their carbon footprint.”

To achieve the target of 50% reduction in carbon footprint by 2030, Arcadis will focus on transitioning to renewable energy, implementing sustainable procurement practices and designs in our future workspaces and reducing travel emissions.
