The challenge

In 2016, Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation (WDOT) was looking to update its existing traffic management system, WisDot, with a system that would enhance the department’s ability to more efficiently, effectively and reliably operate its intelligent transportation systems (ITS) infrastructure, with a key focus on system uptime. Specifically, they wanted the new system to include enhanced system performance metrics and integrate with emerging technologies, such as those associated with connected vehicles.

The solution

Arcadis, formerly Arcadis IBI Group, developed a statewide Next Generation Advanced Traffic Management System to replace WDOT’s existing system. It is the central management element for all traffic data delivered by ITS field equipment for use in traffic management and traveler information provision. The ATMS gives Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation operators a real-time understanding of the road network from live traffic data, facilitating operational decisions to be made, as well as providing real-time information to road users via roadside variable message signs (VMS), website, email and SMS text alerts. The system, developed using our InSight ATMS product, will play a valuable role in the delivery of an efficient and safe road network across the state.

The impact

The ATMS system has enhanced the department’s ability to reliably report on traffic data and make informed decisions about traffic infrastructure changes, ultimately improving traveler safety. Enhanced performance metrics ensure that the WDOT can respond quickly to road incidents, improving overall road efficiency as well.
