Traffic and transit conditions are constantly changing and as a traveler it can be difficult to navigate your route without the most up to date information on your planned path. Looking to address and disseminate traffic information quickly and accurately, the New York State Department of Transportation began looking for a digital web and mobile interface that could integrate real-time information and would be accessible to residents, through travelers and tourists of New York.
Since 2014, Arcadis, formerly Arcadis IBI Group, has delivered and continues to provide the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) with a hosted environment that incorporates state-of-the-art data feed management. This robust solution includes data fusion services, IVR and web, mobile web, and mobile applications.
NYSDOT’s 511 system includes a map service that feeds spatial data to the full range of 511NY solution offerings. The map service provides routing, geospatial referencing, and integration with ESRI and ArcGIS.
The 511NY website is the main conduit of information to end users. It delivers traveler data and other information (such as multimodal service, tourism, safety, etc.) to users through map- and text-based displays, static pages, or hyperlinks. Additional features include a route trip planner, personalized routes with dynamic travel times, email/SMS subscription services and alerts.
Our mobile application is a personal traffic reporting and messaging system for drivers. With hands-free visual and audio traffic reports advising users of individualized traffic conditions delivered at relevant locations as they transit their route, they are always aware of any traffic congestion and events well in advance. 511NY’s IVR allows traveler information data to be accessed via telephone through a Voice User Interface (VUI), utilizing voice or keypad. The IVR User Interface provides users access to the same traveler information data (e.g., events, incidents, travel time, trip planning, etc.) that is available via other dissemination channels (e.g., web, social media feeds, SMS, etc.). The IVR offers hands and eyes-free operation that affords users the ability to receive data whenever and wherever they need it.
New York State’s 511 services aim to meet the specialized needs of commuters, long-distance travelers, tourists, and commercial vehicle operators. By providing a resource for trip planning, traffic conditions, weather updates and alternative transportation information, 511NY helps users travel safely. The platform’s real-time updates allow travelers to make decisions about their travel plans before and while in transit to avoid congestion, inclement weather and road closures, ultimately improving their travel experience.
