The Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had a vision to transform Downtown Dubai into the center of the city and a world-class destination. From a sparse desert to a development with the world’s tallest building, the request at the time was beyond imaginable. Fast forward to now and the vision is a reality.

“Arcadis was appointed to provide independent peer review of the structural system of the tower and was later also chosen as architect and engineer of record.”

Dubai-based developer, Emaar Properties required the best team to design and build the tallest tower in the world, which would become the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai and the surrounding mixed-use development. Having designed and engineered some of the world’s most iconic structures, Arcadis worked closely with Emaar to plan out the Burj Khalifa’s intricate structure and designed its façade. Over 800 meters in height, Burj Khalifa has been named the world’s tallest man-made structure and welcomes over 1.87 million visitors a year.

“The Arcadis-designed Burj Khalifa also took on a starring role in Dubai’s spectacular New Year’s fireworks display – a show which was awarded a Guinness World Record for its stylish start to 2014.”

The substantial size of the project was a challenge in itself and the work continued to rise with further development plans including the Dubai Fountain, Dubai Mall, Burj Towers and the downtown pedestrian bridge. By 2010, Arcadis drew in a team of 130 for Emaar’s collective Downtown Dubai projects and is proud to have been a part of the city's most important landmarks.
