Manchester Airport

Manchester, United Kingdom - Manchester Airport is the third largest airport in the UK and the global gateway to the North of England. With Manchester expected to play a significant role as one of the economic 'powerhouses' of the region, investment in infrastructure and transportation are key for the city and vital to help accelerate growth potential across the entire country.

Manchester airport transformation

The nine-year Manchester Airport Transformation Programme is key to creating a world-class international gateway. However, the sheer scale and scope of the challenge calls for an experienced Programme Management team who can manage and co-ordinate the many parts of this complex and ambitious project. Acting as Managed Service Provider to Manchester Airports Group (MAG), Arcadis is at the very heart of a programme of almost 50 enhancements across the airport.  Taken together, these will radically improve the entire passenger and airline experience.

The £1bn Transformation Programme will increase passenger capacity from 25 million to 35 million passengers by 2024 through the construction of an 85,000sq m extension to Terminal 2, alongside a reconfiguration of the existing 87,000sq m Terminal 1 building. This, along with the construction of three 11,000sq m piers, will allow Terminal 2 to become the airport’s primary Terminal building to cater for increased demand and an expanding flight schedule.

In the first twelve months alone, Arcadis supported the development of the masterplan into a workable concept design, which was fast-tracked to six months rather than nine, as initially planned. Stakeholder-led changes to scope through the concept and design phases have been carefully considered with value management and engineering activities helping to ensure that capital spend is controlled.

Now, nearly four years into the programme, Arcadis has led the Project Management and procurement of over 20 contracts at a value of more than £780 million, successfully transitioning the team into the delivery phase with over £500 million of works currently in construction.

Delivering ahead of schedule

The initial project to be delivered as part of the Transformation Programme is the first of three new piers overlooking the airfield and main terminal extension. At 216m long, Pier 1, with its 11 Gate lounge areas, has been designed for maximum flexibility and will combine narrow stands for smaller aircraft with some Multi Choice Arrangement stands which can also accommodate two larger, wide-bodied aircraft.

At the same time a new £50m, multi-storey car park with space for 3,800 vehicles will be opening. Offering more parking spaces, together with an improved road network to cater for rising traffic volumes, as well as an agile and practical check-in design and new security processes using cutting edge technology, the Transformation Programme will make a huge difference to the way in which passengers travel to, in and around the airport.

In creating a faster and more modern airport experience, the improvements that Arcadis is helping to deliver as part of the Transformation Programme will make Manchester Airport not just a world-class international travel hub, but ensure the creation of an airport that is equipped to meet passenger and airline needs long into the future.
