Amsterdam - The Beacon, a 20-story mixed-use tower developed by G&S Vastgoed and designed by CallisonRTKL, Arcadis’ architecture subsidiary and Powerhouse Company, embodies the latest thinking in sustainable design principles.
Arcadis (Euronext: ARCAD), the leading global Design & Consultancy firm for natural and built assets, today announces that it will be the designer of a new development on Amsterdam’s Zuidas. The building, named The Beacon, will be developed by G&S Vastgoed, a leading Dutch-based property developer. Arcadis will also become a launching tenant and will occupy the top levels of the 20-story tower.
“Arcadis has been working on this development for quite some time, and I’m pleased to announce this project win and exciting development for the company so early in my tenure with Arcadis,” said Peter Oosterveer, who was appointed CEO of Arcadis in April 2017.
Designed by CallisonRTKL, the architecture subsidiary of Arcadis, in partnership with Powerhouse Company, The Beacon is a mixed-use development that integrates office, commercial and residential components into a unified whole. The iconic tower interlocks with a six-level Podium that accommodates residential units, a signature restaurant and streetscape retail.
“Our goal was to create a unified, totally integrated development that is greater than the sum of its parts,” says Jorge Beroiz ARB, RIBA, design lead on the project. “We think the building strikes a traditional chord but is unabashedly contemporary in its geometry, use of materials and integration of technology.”
The design embodies the latest thinking in sustainable design principals, reflecting Arcadis’ commitment to improving quality of life.
“This will be our global headquarters,” adds Oosterveer. “The project must fully embody our core values as a global steward of the environment.”
A living roof, photovoltaic technology, solar fins and wind turbines are among the elements that are being considered. Designed with the flexibility to accommodate a range of tenancies, the floor plans have been configured to maximize access to daylight, encourage walkability within the workplace and harvest reusable energy. The building will be registered for BREEAM certification.
The building is currently in the formative stages of design and is expected to enter jurisdictional reviews and impact assessment later this summer. Construction is expected to begin in 2018 with initial occupancy expected in 2021. CallisonRTKL will serve as the design architect, the Powerhouse Group will serve as architect for the Podium and residential component, and Arcadis NL will serve as architect of record for the tower.
