Bridge over river Rhine connects Germany with France

Arcadis, the leading global design and consultancy firm for natural and built assets, announced today the opening of a bridge over the Rhine between Strasbourg, France and Kehlm Germany.

The bridge will provide a smooth connection between two major European countries for several types of sustainable transport: pedestrians, cyclists and light rail. Arcadis was responsible for the design and the integrated project management of the iconic new Rhine bridge.

With a length of 290 metres and a width of 16 metres, the bridge is a bow-string type structure that enables the extension of line D of the Strasbourg tramway towards Kehl in Germany.

The bridge will boost the development of cross-border links, reduce the existing road traffic and improve the convenience and safety of urban pedestrian, bicycle and rail mobility.

"We don't build a bridge towards Germany every day", said Alain Fontanel, President of the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeoise (Strasbourg Transport Company). "This bridge is a European symbol for the city of Strasbourg and an important landmark for the reputation of the Eurometropolis."

"Working together with other companies was a great experience”, commented Didier Guth, manager of Arcadis' Civil Engineering Works department. “It enabled us to incorporate other know-how, think differently and forced us to take decisions very quickly, demonstrating great flexibility and versatility."

Project partners for the Rhine bridge project are Bouygues TPRF, Victor Buyck Steel Construction, Lingenheld SA, Schleith, Marc Barani architectes and Arcadis.
