University of Hong Kong link bridge between Run Run Shaw and Meng Wah buildings, HKSAR

Hong Kong - The key aspect that Arcadis developed on this project was to provide an elegant transparent bridge that allowed connection between the ageing buildings without major alteration works being required.

Our Role

Structural and MEP Consultancy Services. Arcadis was responsible for the design and construction supervision.

The bridge was carefully configured to allow attachment to the existing 50-year old structures and was optimised to ensure the loading was not excessive. New structural openings were made within the building and non-intrusive piling system consisting of mini-piles was adopted in one location where the existing foundations were under capacity. Minor underground utilities diversions are involved.

Key Challenges

Ensuring that the existing buildings were not overloaded with minimal strengthening, while allowing access around the busy university site to be maintained.

Innovation/Best Practice

The design featured prefabricated steelwork that could be erected on site with minimal on-site welding. Mini-piles were used in two locations only. Access for the rigs was extremely constrained and these were drilled using special platforms and low-headroom gear.

What we are proud of

An engineering solution that married the strict requirements of the limited existing building capacity with the functional and architectural requirements of the new structure.
