Developing an innovative concept for a four lane underwater tunnel in Sydney.

Sydney’s Harbour Bridge is the city’s major car, bus and rail link between both sides of the city, but faced capacity with rapid population and traffic growth.

Despite calls for a second bridge over decades, Arcadis helped develop an innovative concept for a four lane underwater tunnel that was ultimately agreed to and constructed.

As Design Manager, Arcadis not only coordinated the engineering design of the project including complex ventilation works, but major modifications to adjoining roads and Sydney Harbour Bridge’s historic pylons.

An instant hit with Sydneysiders, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel now sees over 85,000 vehicles per day cross from one side to the other.
