Kwun Tong Line Extension

Hong Kong - This new underground station is designed to improve mobility within Kowloon district of Hong Kong. It is located beneath the busy streets of one of Hong Kong’s largest private housing estates. As a result, one of the major challenges for the project is to mitigate disruption to the residents and general public during the construction of the station.

Arcadis was appointed to provide a design services of the station and overrun tunnel, and achieve all the necessary approval from government authorities. The main design scope included civil, structural, architectural, MEP, station planning (i.e, people movement), traffic, fire engineering, risk assessment, human factor and cost estimation services.

With the formation level being 25m below the street level, the station design will adopt a single platform layout served by two independent concourse areas (about 100m x 20m each) to service peak train operations every four minutes. A 100m long platform tunnel connects the concourse areas.

The station will include a combination of both independent and integrated entrances to an adjoining commercial development. The overall footprint of the station was reduced in the detailed design stage, minimizing the pedestrian impact, construction waste and a reduction in the size of the construction site.

Furthermore, a traffic deck system has been designed to support the existing services and ensure regular vehicular traffic flow and pedestrian movement are maintained throughout the construction works. This also acts as a noise and dust barrier which keeps the construction activities away from the public.
