The aging Birmingham Children’s Hospital is facing problems due to its space and age limitations. Renovations are needed and the hospital has ambitious plans to combine the women and children’s hospital. This will give capability to treat women, babies, children and teens at one facility without complicated and often dangerous transfers.

The Steelhouse Lane facility will provide new and improved patient facilities for cancer, haematology and stem cell services. It will involve building three theatres and 18 surgical beds, and a new rare diseases center for children and young people.

The quantity surveying and project management provided by Arcadis will improve healthcare quality and accessibility to women and children.

The hospital provides general and emergency health care services to children in Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond. It specializes in liver transplantation, cardiac, neonatal surgery, burns treatment, renal care and leukemia research. Birmingham Children's also hosts the West Midlands Regional Centre for Cleft Lip and Palate, providing a multidisciplinary service for cleft patients, including speech & language therapy, dental, orthodontics, maxillofacial, plastic surgery and psychology. It is currently the only hospital in the UK to carry out intestinal transplants in children.
