Wolverhampton, United Kingdom - Arcadis supported AkzoNobel in a novel remediation of a residential area developed on a former production site. The in-situ approach safely and sustainably remediated the site while minimizing risk and disruption for residents, significantly reducing liability and protecting AkzoNobel’s brand.
Carbon disulphide (CS2) contamination was identified beneath a housing estate that was redeveloped from an AkzoNobel production site. Being liable, AkzoNobel needed to remediate the site and reduce the CS2 to target levels. Being committed to the sustainability of its assets, AkzoNobel was determined remediate the site quickly and safely, with as little risk and disruption to the residents as possible.
The challenge was that CS2 remediation is traditionally conducted ex-situ, which would be disruptive to residents, lengthy and extremely costly. Therefore, AkzoNobel turned to Arcadis to design, test and implement a novel remediation approach that was less disruptive, safer, more sustainable and more cost effective.
Utilizing years of remediation experience, Arcadis’ environmental experts designed an innovative, in-situ approach to CS2 remediation of soil and groundwater. There were no other known safe and effective in-situ technologies available in the UK for remediation of CS2 prior to this. The unique concept was developed in collaboration with AkzoNobel, undertaking critical research in Arcadis’ European Treatability Facility.
In a first of its kind treatability study, Arcadis validated the effectiveness of the solution, successfully securing approval to implement it from the Environment Agency (EA) and the Local City Council Environmental Protection Office (LA).
Throughout the full-scale implementation of the remediation, Arcadis also acted as overall project manager, including supporting on negotiations and communications with regulatory authorities and residents to ensure all parties were informed and satisfied.
The result was a successful, safe and rapid remediation of the site, which minimized risk and disruption to residents and saved AkzoNobel €20m in environmental liability. The novel approach won the 2011 Brownfield Briefing Award for Best In-Situ Treatment.
