Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Dubai Marina - Set in the heart of new Dubai, Dubai Marina Yacht Club (DMYC) has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the renowned private yacht clubs of the region, with a purpose built clubhouse forming the centerpiece of four distinctive marinas. Arcadis has designed and constructed the city's most beautiful and recognized landmarks and continues to strengthen its portfolio with the addition of DMYC.
Arrayed along the length of a remarkable 3.5 km canal, the marinas provide sheltered berthing for over five hundred yachts, in a setting that is simply unrivalled.
With a choice of casual or fine dining restaurants, a lively sports lounge, or the tranquillity of the club lounges, all ensure that the clubhouse is a place of refuge throughout the week and not just simply a weekend get-away. For the keen yachting enthusiast, the club organizes the increasingly renowned ‘cruising club’, which offers exclusively to DMYC members the opportunity to explore regional yachting destinations, and to join the regular series of workshops and seminars with fellow yachtsmen.
Emaar approached Arcadis to design a signature yacht club building to act as a key attraction within the Dubai Marina area, and to serve the boat berthing area in the Dubai Marina development. Arcadis worked on the yacht club from beginning to end including the design planning, on-site delivery and management of the entire design and specialist consultant teams involved in the project.
“More than simply a club for those with yachts or a love of the sea, DMYC was founded to satisfy the finer things in life with the clubhouse and state-of-the-art marina facilities ensuring a five-star experience.”
The project work called for a leisure building with member facilities, restaurants and cafes, meeting and training rooms, marina control tower and a retail component. Furthermore, the club building accommodated the management for the boat berths and marina.
The design draws upon nautical elements and the use of material in the form of timber structure and large glazed areas, aids in maximizing the view potential of the large landscape area and marina waterways. The building is set out on two levels, one being the primary access from the adjacent road which is elevated in respect to the marina, and the lower level with retail and cafes provides access to the promenade level and boat berths.
The key challenge was providing all the accommodation within the linear site form and working with two primary site access points on different levels. Providing ample external space in the form of a large cantilevered deck area overlooking the marina was also key to success of the project.
The unique design sets the building apart from the surrounding residential towers, and creates a focal point within the larger marina development. Large roof overhangs provides shading on the façade whilst allowing clear glass to be used to the entire building envelope and allows for sufficient external area to be utilized by the public.
