Safe transit for Fairmaster at the Teporti terminal

Itajaí Brazil - The Fairmaster, a Heavy Lift Vessel over 150m long, would be the ship with the largest draught ever to arrive at and depart from the Teporti terminal. Because of this, the ship needed approval from the local port authorities.

DETERMINED LIMITING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The fabrication facility of Teporti  in Brazil produces large industrial modules to be mounted on FPSOs (Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessels). These modules are transported by seagoing Heavy Lift Vessels, which have to maneuver 12 km along the Itajaí-Açu river. This strongly meandering river is subject to river discharges and tides, which have a large impact on the current and water level, making the transit a challenging endeavor.

By doing nautical simulations on Arcadis’ in-house simulator, SHIP-Navigator, the limiting environmental conditions were determined for the Fairmaster to arrive at and depart from the Teporti terminal. By combining this information with actual tidal forecasts, Arcadis gave recommendations regarding the tidal window and strategies to perform the transit safely. The report was delivered to the maritime authorities and marine pilots, and on its basis permission for the maneuver was given. Within one week after the simulations, the transit maneuvers were carried out safely by the local marine pilots.

Arcadis has been advising on engineering and navigation operations in the Itajaí area for more than 10 years. With our previous feasibility study and live workshop using SHIP-Navigator we earned the confidence of local stakeholders and pilots.
