The Porte de Vincennes forms part of eleven sites in the Major Urban Renewal Project for the City of Paris which aims to upgrade the Paris city gates and develop the link with the Paris banlieues (suburbs). Cornerstone of this operation is the reconfiguration of the central interchange overhanging the périphérique [ring road] is a highly complex technical and organisational operation:
"The City of Paris has entrusted us with the implementation of this operation at the Porte de Vincennes", explains François Valour, Deputy Director of Infrastructure and Construction within SEMAPA. "This major operation, which forms part of a comprehensive initiative in construction projects, notably aims to improve the living environment for residents and reconfigure the interface to re-establish urban continuity."
Alongside the architecture firm Lambert Lénack Architectes Urbanistes, the Berlin-based landscapers Topotek 1 and the lighting engineers LEA (Les éclairagistes Associés), Arcadis will design for SEMAPA, building manager of the operation, a project with the aim of improving the urban continuity between Paris and its banlieues [suburbs] while also developing public spaces, including a green belt intended for sporting and leisure use.
Different realizations and challenges
The operation envisages the creation of a mixed program of activities, student accommodation and equipment centered on public spaces and reclassified gardens, even "accentuated" intended for sporting and leisure use. The current interchange will be reconfigured and its tunnel approaches filled to facilitate the maintenance of the historic Nation - Château de Vincennes axis, and to improve the urban continuity between Paris and Saint-Mandé. The covering of the périphérique will also be completed with the construction of buildings spanning the infrastructure.
