DP World Antwerp container terminal larger and more modern

Antwerp, Belgium - DP World Antwerp wants to expand the current 2.5 million containers’ capacity to 3.4 million in 2023. To this end, it is expanding and modernising the existing container terminal at the Deurganck dock on the left bank (Antwerp Gateway) by more than a third. This strengthens the market position of Antwerp as the second container port in Europe and provides additional employment in transport and technology.

Strengthening of market position and additional employment

The DP World Antwerp terminal is one of the largest container transhipment companies in the port of Antwerp. It receives the largest container ships in the world and transports the containers via various transport options to major European consumption and production centres on the mainland. To expand capacity, the traditional container terminal is being converted into an automated site in order to optimize the current available space. Not only the movable facilities such as mobile container lifts (straddle carriers), but also the fixed infrastructure such as rail cranes, four additional quay cranes, automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) and parking and refuelling facilities. There will also be a new, energy-efficient building with facilities for dock workers, management, CEO and administrative services. The old building makes way for placing containers. It involves a total investment of 197 million euros. Arcadis will be supervising the complete transformation of the terminal for DP World.

In addition to general project management, a team of experts from the Netherlands and Belgium is taking care of a logistical study into site optimization and the required permits. They are also arranging the functional and technical design for the civil infrastructure and ASC crane tracks, organizing the contract and cost management and are responsible for management and technical supervision during implementation.

"Arcadis has a great deal of expertise and experience in the field of hydraulic engineering, ports and waterways. Furthermore, the engineering firm also has all the required specialists in the field of environment, infrastructure and buildings under one roof. This makes Arcadis the ideal partner to realize this expansion as quickly as possible.”
