Meadowhall, Sheffield

United Kingdom, Sheffield - Meadowhall is one of the largest retail centres in the UK, but after 25 years and over 500 million visitors, the owners, British Land and Norges, are investing in a major refurbishment and proposed extension to transform the centre.

£60 million

remodelling of the existing mall

330,000 sq ft

multi-level extension

The first phase involves a £60m remodelling of the existing shopping malls. This will include creating four new shopping districts, each with their own contemporary look and feel to transform the centre and bring it up to date with a  brighter, lighter, and more spacious feel.  The new centre will be more navigable, with the removal of columns, installation of additional glazing, and extra seating creating a more welcoming and vibrant environment for visitors and a major draw for new retailers.

The works are being undertaken out of hours to ensure minimum disruption, with the mall remaining open to shoppers and allowing businesses to continue trading as usual. Arcadis is acting as Project Manager and Quantity Surveyor, as well as advising on Health and Safety while the works are underway.

The second phase is a proposed £300m extension which will see the introduction of ‘The Leisure Hall’ – a 330,000 sq ft multi-level extension housed under a glazed roof, adding dining and entertainment options currently not available at Meadowhall. These include new restaurants, a state-of-the-art cinema to replace the existing cinema, a new café court, gym and additional leisure space.

Arcadis has been providing project and commercial management throughout the planning application phase.

Meadowhall is a fantastic example of creating sustainable places where people want to live, work, eat and shop
