Bringing world-class healthcare facilities to Qatar

Doha, Qatar, Middle East - Human development is one of the cornerstones of Qatar’s National Vision 2030. A key part of this is focused on improving the healthcare infrastructure within the country, so that the people of Qatar have access to a world-class level of patient care.

Hamad Medical City

To support this goal, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qatar’s principle public healthcare provider, developed an ambitious masterplan to increase healthcare capacity by building a number of new hospitals, clinics and research facilities by 2030.

In 2012, Arcadis was appointed to provide project, program and design management services for the Hamad bin Khalifa Medical City campus – the largest capital project commissioned by Hamad Medical Corporation to date. Arcadis was also asked to provide operational commissioning services to ensure the facilities were ready for use when they opened.

Medical City is a state-of-the-art complex covering more than 250,000m² and over 500 patient beds.  The complex includes the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute – a 38,000m² rehabilitation hospital with almost 200 beds which opened in December 2016 - as well as the Women’s Wellness and Research Center and the Ambulatory Care Center which opened earlier this year.

The patient rooms and en-suite facilities reflect a design that ensures patient privacy and dignity as well as responding to cultural norms. The broader design reflects international best practice in terms of efficient flow of patients and staff and safe operations across all facilities. The facilities incorporate 21 operating theatres, designed for long-term flexibility, safe operations, and optimized construction space. The design also responds to the objective of lowering risk of injury to patients.

Once fully complete, Medical City will be one of the largest healthcare facilities in the world. The scale and complexity of the project highlights the country’s efforts in building a strong and long-term multi-specialty medical center for Doha.

To provide optimum value and ensure international best practice, Arcadis brought together a team of capable experts with an in-depth understanding of the global healthcare sector. The team could incorporate the latest trends around clinical service planning, medical equipment, and hospital design.

The technical specifications required to build a healthcare facility of this size was a key challenge and it required rigorous project management to keep it on track. Hospital construction is significantly more complex than other commercial developments as it is as much about service design as it is about physical design.

Much of the complexity stems from the fact that hospitals contain interconnected clinical operations supported by highly specialized medical equipment, IT systems and building systems. Nearly every room within a hospital is designed specifically for the support it lends to healthcare teams and patients. The coordination of these key elements, which starts at the beginning of early planning and design stages, and continues through the construction phase, was a key challenge for the team.

Since 2012, the Arcadis team worked collaboratively with a number of stakeholders including Ashghal and the Ministry of Public Health to deliver world-class hospitals that have set a new standard around patient care. In 2016, Hamad Medical Corporation moved into the new hospitals and are already realizing new clinical services that are helping to improve quality of life for the people of Qatar.
