Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Bridge

Bahrain, Middle East - The Government of Bahrain was developing a new port at Hidd on the island of Muharraq to meet the increasing demands of utilities and freight transportation and needed a new bridge to connect the port to the highway network.

Intermodal transport is a very important part of a total mobility plan for a region or country. The Ministry of Roads and Agriculture, Bahrain, was looking to create a main crossing route for major utilities. This included power transmission cables and water mains from the new electricity and water distribution plants being built on Hidd. The client was looking to deliver a landmark structure that would be both functional and architecturally outstanding.

The 404m marine bridge has a 120m tied arch span weighing 2,500 tonnes that was pre-assembled in Dubai before being barged to Bahrain and lifted into position using the Middle East's largest floating crane.

Islamic symbolism features strongly in the design and the bridge incorporate several geometric patterns. Intermediate piers are star shaped in section and rotating star shaped mobiles are incorporated onto the hangers. 

Arcadis was responsible for carrying out the design and site supervision of the bridge. The concept stage involved considering alternative structural forms, costing each solution and assessing their constructability and whole life maintenance cost, taking into account the client need for a landmark structure.

Arcadis’ design expertise, combined with our engineering knowledge enabled us to deliver an iconic bridge to the client. The new bridge carries road traffic from the new port and conveys power and water from the Hidd Peninsular to mainland, whilst providing a landmark structure that identifies the maritime threshold of Bahrain.
