Modernizing waste water treatment for the remote Queensland township of Weipa.

Modernizing waste water treatment for the remote township of Weipa, near one of the world’s largest bauxite mines, so it is both legally compliant, and meets the very highest environmental and technological standards.

Arcadis proposed converting the existing facultative lagoons to an Australia first Membrane Bioreactor Plant that could sustainably manage long-term population growth and increased effluent quality requirements.

Being 2600 kilometres from Brisbane means Weipa’s remoteness is a unique challenge for supplies and logistics, but finishing construction before the onset of the annual wet season when roads often flood was also imperative to avoid major cost and time overruns.
