Jakarta International Velodrome

Indonesia - 2018 Asian Games joint hosting cities, Jakarta and Palembang, both have good existing sports venues, however there were needs to build new ones within limited time. The Jakarta International Velodrome, a key venue for the 2018 Asian Games, was delivered on programme and within budget due in part to the combined efforts of the Arcadis teams in London and Jakarta, Indonesia.

London based client ESG signed a contract in September 2016 to design and build the velodrome using fast-track, temporary demountable structures technology to construct a permanent building in time for the Games, starting in August 2018.

Arcadis assisted ESG in setting up contracts and commercial arrangements with the Games’ organisers, along with ESG’s in-country JV partner and a host of international sub-contractors and sub-consultants. Arcadis in Jakarta supported with local Project Management expertise.

Arcadis has an established relationship with ESG having worked with the company for many years on projects at home and overseas, including the 2012 London Water Polo and Shooting venues, and the moveable seating for the London Stadium.

Overseas work includes the development of the Doha Showcase Stadium, which was a centrepiece of Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 Football World Cup, and the current development of an outdoor concert venue for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in the USA.

“There will be significant legacy benefits post-Games. As well as continuing to act as a high-performance training and competition venue, the velodrome will serve community needs and host other community sports activities such as volleyball, badminton and futsal. The velodrome, together with a new metro station to be built nearby, will be the catalyst for the regeneration of this area of North Jakarta and will leave a lasting legacy.”

Olly Watts, Director, ESG shared positive comment on John Gaffney, UK Project Director for the project: “John’s rich and varied experience, particularly in the sports sector, allows us to present ES Global’s expertise at the earliest stages of the project lifecycle. Working with the support of the broader Arcadis team, gives us great confidence to take on the exciting projects we do, working across the globe.”
