Guangzhou Railway Station

Shanghai, China - China’s unparalleled economic success story and rapid shift from a rural to an urban society, has resulted in the rapid growth of the metropolis of Guangzhou and its surrounding cities. New transit has been created to join neighboring cities to form a more cohesive network.

To further position Guangzhou as a key metropolitan area in the country and help establish a distinct identity for the people of Guangzhou, the government saw a need to create a plan that fully embraces the city’s new $1.2 billion railway station into a cohesive transportation and development program.

Our people were appointed to create a transit-oriented, mixed use master plan for this project. It needed to create a sustainable, live, work and play environment and contribute to future sensitive development of the area.

Designed with the intent of accommodating both national and local needs and actively contributing to the economy, the final design carefully blends appropriate scale, density and accessibility. It also includes well-planned pedestrian routes, ample parks and open spaces and current and future pedestrian, bicycle and transportation systems.

Along the waterfront, the plan combines office and exhibition areas with leisure and lifestyle-based space. While mixed-use is an accepted practice in China, certain planning regulations make it more difficult to implement. Our scheme aims to work within these planning codes to provide a vital and robust 24-hour environment.
