United States, California, Los Angeles and San Francisco - With trains travelling up to 220mph, the California High Speed Rail is the first system of its kind in the US connecting Los Angeles to San Francisco in less than three hours, whilst also contributing to the economy and the environment.
The quality of a region or country’s infrastructure is vital to the competitive advantage of its economy. The Californian state infrastructure has not kept pace with the increase in population, tourism and economic growth in the region, with highways, airports and rail networks already operating at capacity. There is a real need for modernization and expansion to meet existing demand and future growth needs.
As part of the solution to meet this demand, the California High Speed Rail Authority is planning, designing and building a high-speed rail link from Los Angeles to San Francisco - a demanding and complex proposition with no precedent in the USA. The rail link will connect the mega regions of the state, boosting the economy in the area whilst preserving agricultural and protective lands.
With specialist expertise vital to the success of the project, the client chose Arcadis to provide project and construction management oversight for this element of the US$68 billion network. Drawing on our specialist expertise in high-speed rail, the US Arcadis team is working in collaboration with the European Rail team to provide assurance that technical and contract requirements, including costs, are being met. We are also providing oversight of inspection and testing of the high-speed train infrastructure, enabling the client to effectively manage multiple large contracts, as well as technical and environmental compliance - including recycling, utility relocation, construction safety and the essential public outreach.
With our involvement in this project, Arcadis continues to contribute to some of California’s largest public works. Through our extensive expertise in design-build oversight and global high-speed rail we can help deliver a positive outcome for the local community, the economy and environment; the link is expected to significantly reduce the number of cars on the road, reduce carbon dioxide emissions as well as increase regional tourism, investment and employment.
Successful implementation of this rail link is expected to be the catalyst for the development of other high-speed rail networks in the United States.
