Station Rotterdam Centraal

Rotterdam, The Netherlands - An essential upgrade of one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands, Rotterdam’s new central station will accommodate increased passenger traffic for years to come.

100,000

Passengers per day

320,000

Passengers a day by 2025

Rotterdam Central Station has, with more than 100,000 passengers per day, reached the limits of its capacity. The passenger numbers will grow to 320,000 in 2025. Therefore a new station, a project in which Arcadis plays an important role was necessary. ProRail, together with the Municipality of Rotterdam are the principals for the realization of this new Station Rotterdam Centraal.

In Station Rotterdam Centraal the European train travelers enters the Netherlands. It fits a station that is in all respects, but particularly in efficiency, capacity, comfort and allure, can compete with other European stations. The new station is also grand scaled. The new passage travelers, including shops on either sides, gets a width of 50 m and a spacious interior height. The station is designed as a high and bright hall where all functions are associated with a modern station. All tracks and platforms have an integrated platform roof with a surface area of about 150 by 250 meters. The passengers must get the feeling that it enters a distinguished building.
The construction of the new station is preceded by conditioning work. Such as the conversion of the western tunnel to a temporary passenger tunnel, building a new temporary station with a replacement station accommodation, and build a new bridge over the tracks travelers. Also, the demolition of the existing concourses on the south and north sides, precedes the start of the new building. This guarantees that the station can remain open, during the construction, Meanwhile the contractor can performed his work.

The new station is realized by implementing multiple contracts. Partly traditional and partly design & contract (D & C). Station Rotterdam Centraal was designed by Team CS: a cooperation of Benthem Crouwel Architects, MVSA Meyer and Van Schooten Architecten and West 8.

Arcadis was responsible for the engineering, contract management, site management and cost management.
