Cable Car; safe, affordable and fast public transport

The Netherlands - A cable car or funicular railway is a safe, affordable and fast means of public transport for short distances. Travelers get on and off constantly without having to wait very long and because of the open experience, a cable car also attracts tourists. The payback period is relatively short and covers all investments and operating costs.

Undisturbed mobility in the third dimension

Cable car for public transport in cities is a relatively new concept. Cities abroad have already found it to be a fast, reliable and affordable instrument in addition to other public transport options. Examples include New York, Rio de Janeiro and Medellín and, closer to home, London, Le Havre, Toulouse, Koblenz and soon, Gothenburg.

Relieving the hubs

There are various reasons for mapping out the possibilities for a cable car. The main reason is often the same, namely the fact that a regular system does not offer a solution or is too expensive. In the Netherlands, various local authorities are looking for alternatives to relieve the transport hubs that are under pressure. It is also an alternative for crossing waterways or busy infrastructure efficiently and comfortably.

Experience and managing flows of visitors

Roosendaal, for instance, has plans to build a cable car between Designer Outlet Roosendaal and the city center. Building a cable car creates an exchange of traffic flows, while the city center will benefit from the anticipated increase in visitors. Furthermore, it will relieve the existing infrastructure between the two areas. The Floriade Expo 2022 will also be using a cable car to manage flows of visitors. On top of that, it will enhance the experience of this horticultural exposition. Floriade 2012 in Venlo also used a cable car to manage logistic flows. Arcadis was involved in its design and realization.

From mobility studies to completion

Various initiatives for cable cars exist in the Netherlands. Arcadis will be conducting the necessary studies for the Rotterdam local authorities and the initiators in Roosendaal. After an exploratory and in-depth feasibility study, the Amsterdam local authorities will take a follow-up step by signing a letter of intent for further elaboration and realization. Gothenburg and Berlin are currently working on realization plans. For Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere, Arcadis has teamed up with Doppelmayer from Austria to prepare plans for a cable car, as it did for the Floriade Expo 2012 in Venlo.

Integrated approach

A cable car is completed in various steps. It starts with feasibility. Experts look at usefulness and need, user potential, type of cable car, technical applications, costs, planning and potential obstructions. If this yields a positive assessment, an in-depth study is conducted, during which Arcadis and an approved cable car building company will look into the technical feasibility in more detail. On a final note, a cable car can be implemented fast and it is a relatively inexpensive alternative compared to more traditional transport systems.
