The aim of the $630 million project is to reduce congestion in the local area and provide an effective link between Sydney and Bomaderry.

It is estimated that the bypass will cut morning northbound travel times by almost 65%, with southbound travellers experiencing a similar saving during the evening peak. The motorway will provide an alternative route to the Princes Highway and replace a section of the Illawarra Highway that is commonly affected by flooding.

Arcadis, in joint venture with Cardno, was engaged in May 2014 to deliver the concept design, environmental assessment, and site investigations for the project. The scope of the project included extensive options assessment, geotechnical investigations, complex traffic modelling, flood modelling, aviation assessment, ecology, heritage, urban design, community and stakeholder engagement, and engineering design.

Throughout the project, Arcadis and Cardno were engaged to provide additional services that were outside the original scope including additional site investigations, sustainability advice and ISCA (Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia) rating of the project, strategic and final business case preparation, Building Information Modelling (BIM) of the concept design, and detailed design documentation of the Croom Regional Sporting Complex – a major community facility affected by the bypass.

Arcadis’ involvement in the project, which was largely completed by late 2017, was spread over a four-year period. Within that time and in partnership with Cardno, Arcadis helped RMS achieve its ambition of developing a bypass that will reduce travel times and increases road safety for locals, tourists, businesses, and freight operators in the New South Wales South Coast region.
