Accidents on site to dateIn June 2013 Nissan wanted to tackle this issue and partnered with Zero Carbon Futures, a UK-based low carbon technology company, to develop a UK-wide Charge Point Delivery Programme to bring quality charging stations, speed, and value for money to the electric vehicle driver.
Installations of Rapid Chargers in the UK had only been completed on an individual basis and therefore there was no best practice process in place to deliver this ambitious project. Nissan and Zero Carbon Futures therefore appointed Arcadis as their Delivery Partner to develop an “industrialised” process so that multiple installations could be achieved simultaneously. This would allow upwards of 20 sites to be built and commissioned across the UK each month.
The Rapid Charging units were to be placed as close as possible to motorway service stations and retail outlets. To ensure consistency of approach, we established a Programme Management Office in London and an online collaboration programme management tool ensuring one version of the truth, robust reporting and easily accessible information such as specifications and tools.
We undertook a procurement exercise to establish a framework of competent contractors that focused on safety, driving value for money and high-quality installations who could meet the tight programme requirements. Regular health and safety spot checks on contractors throughout the process has ensured zero accidents on site to date. This was particular important given that the project was underway in live retail sites including motorway and trunk road service stations.
The first roll out of its kind, we helped Nissan and Zero Carbon Futures achieve this unique venture by developing an ‘industrialised’ approach for the project, saving the client time and money.
“I’d like to give a big personal thank you to you all and say that the contribution, effort and attention to detail you guys deliver is really making a difference to how this project has worked out. The last year has been a challenge and the next one will be no less of a one, but together we are making a positive difference out there.” John Lowe, Nissan Programme Manager
