Alpha Coal Accommodation Village

Galilee Basin, QLD Australia - Creating worker accommodation at one of the future world’s biggest resource projects in Queensland’s Galilee Basin

Setting new benchmarks for mining accommodation in Australia.

The Alpha Coal project in Queensland’s Galilee Basin will produce around 7.9 billion tonnes of thermal coal over the next 30 years, but attracting and retaining a skilled workforce is key.

To create 4200 world-class housing units across 5 camps along a 500 kilometre corridor Arcadis blended master planning and engineering services to meet the challenge of building sustainable living environments in a harsh, remote environment. Housing units were divided between the main village of 2400 units and the temporary units for the rail construction teams.

To set a new benchmark in mine onsite facilities, Arcadis’ master plan for each “village” accommodated all services, access, technologies and facilities, as well as sustainable landscaping and water use. This was a deliberate change in accommodation planning, away from the “camp” mentality to a new township philosophy.
