Environmental and Social Due Diligence for fertilizer plant in India

India - A Fertilizer Plant in India needs credit for optimization and development. In order to safeguard sound environmental, social and health and safety (ESHS) performances and to mitigate the associated risks and impacts, the possible lender demands an Environmental and Social Due Diligence (ESDD).

As shown per literature and field visit, the plant was not compliant to International Environmental and Social Guidelines (e.g. IFC PS) and Good International Industrial Practices (GIIP) yet. A lack of stakeholder engagement, non-compliance to local permitting, opaque documenting, inappropriate waste and water management practices, and flood risks due to its location next to the shore are the key challenges to fulfil before complying to international Environmental and Social Guidelines and GIIP.

The client was provided a clear overview of its shortcomings in relation to Environmental and Social International Guidelines and GIIP’s, including clear pragmatic advices and capacity development. This capacity development assures a swifter process to get Environmental and Social performance compliant to the IFC PS and GIIP on short notice.

The ESDD included a significant findings summary, ESDD report with corresponding Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) and an advice regarding the follow-up approach including a managing/monitoring regime. Arcadis was able to combine its local knowledge with in-house expertise by close collaboration of the Dutch and Indian offices. By doing this the client was delivered a clear benchmark for the plants’ future activities.
