The challenge

A new research space

In Bresso, on the outskirts of Milan, stands OpenZone: a leading scientific campus in the field of life-sciences innovation and research. At a time when the urgent need to create new connections between various different skills and languages, especially in the field of healthcare, is on everyone's radar, we had the opportunity to support an institution that studies innovative perspectives and opportunities to improve the existence of humankind.

The solution

An integrated approach for an ambitious project

How could our expertise help to expand a healthcare research center? To ensure that our contribution was effective, we worked in an integrated manner, supporting OpenZone with specialist consultants in the design and management of work to demolish existing industrial buildings and decontaminate surface soil. Through studies, surveys and models, both digital and vector, we proposed new methodologies linked to the design stage using BIM, which provided the database of initial information that enabled the property to be efficiently and optimally managed. It also (and most importantly) enabled the whole process to be digitized, starting from the surveying and demolition phases and extending to asset and facility management through dedicated platforms based on IFC models, which are source databases for all BIM objects.

The impact

Sustainability and technology to support research

What does it mean to provide support to those who work in the life sciences field? In a sense, for us, it has meant directly contributing to the community's future. The construction of Z-Life is an important stage in OpenZone's development plan, which will result in the campus covering an area of 37,000 m² by 2022. This is a considerable increase that will give new impetus to research and experimentation for a better quality of life within a technologically advanced, sustainable and (most importantly) livable space for the 1,200 operators who will work there in two years' time. This is all very rewarding and serves only to motivate us to do our best.
