Arcadis reinforces planning expertise with new senior hire

Birmingham, United Kingdom - Arcadis has further strengthened its Development and Strategic Planning expertise with the appointment of Ellen O’Grady as Associate Technical Director. Based in Birmingham, Ellen will support strategic growth opportunities around the UK, with a particular focus on developing and strengthening Arcadis’ offer to central government departments engaging in site rationalisation and disposal programmes.

Ellen is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and brings nearly 17 years’ experience from across the public and private sectors. Previously an Associate Director at Amec Foster Wheeler / Wood PLC, Ellen also has significant expertise developed over more than 10 years working as a Senior Planner for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) at the Ministry of Defence, as well as working in both the Development and Transport teams at Birmingham City Council.

At DIO, Ellen specialised in leading large-scale site disposals and redevelopments, as well as acting as planning lead to the national Estate Optimisation Strategy and providing advice as to sites’ potential for military intensification and/or residential redevelopment. Ellen has led on a number of key projects, including the mixed-use, 1,900-dwelling redevelopment of Graven Hill in Bicester, as well as obtaining full planning consent for the development of high-density residential accommodation at RAF High Wycombe in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and provided planning consultancy advice to London Luton Airports Operations Ltd, including gaining planning permission for an extension to the terminal building. As such, Ellen will be bringing to Arcadis a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of development management, estate rationalisation planning and the Development Control Order process.

Commenting on her appointment, Ellen said:

“From the ongoing devolution agenda, to changes in planning regulations, affordable housing requirements and space standards, our industry is facing a plethora of challenges. That makes it an exciting time not only to be joining a company that has some of the most diverse capabilities – and clients - in the industry, but also to be taking a leading role in guiding our public sector and developer clients through this changing landscape. I’m really looking forward to working with the team to help bring forward and deliver projects right around the UK.”

Louise Brooke-Smith, UK Head of Development and Planning at Arcadis, added:

“As an addition to the Development and Planning team here at Arcadis, Ellen is the perfect fit. With her expertise and breadth of experience in both the public and private sector she can bring a real focus to our strategic planning work for a wide range of our clients around the UK. She has worked on a number of high profile and challenging schemes during her career to date and, as such, the calibre of her experience speaks for itself. I’m pleased to welcome Ellen on board!”
