Geotechnical engineering consultancy services

The subsurface is the foundation of all infrastructure, supporting both natural and built assets. Yet it remains one of the largest sources of complexity and risk. Traditional approaches often treat the ground conditions as obstacles, relying on reactive, site-specific investigations. At Arcadis, our geotechnical engineering teams take a broader view, enabling risk-informed decisions that protect capital investment and long-term performance.

Managing ground risk and subsurface uncertainty

Global pressures are driving the need for resilient, cost-effective infrastructure—starting from the ground up. Urban growth demands deeper excavations and more complex foundations, aging infrastructure requires efficient renewal strategies, and climate risks call for rigorous assessment in high-hazard areas.

By proactively managing ground and subsurface risk, we help protect project schedules, budgets, and long-term performance, ensuring infrastructure is safe, stable, and built to last.

Geotechnical engineering is mission-critical across the asset lifecycle. Applied early, it reduces uncertainty before capital is committed to final designs—elevating geotech from a technical requirement to a strategic risk-management function.

Project success—and the reliable operation of critical facilities—depends on applying geotechnical expertise from the earliest conceptual stages. For clients, this means stronger financial predictability and reduced downstream exposure.

Arcadis’ geotechnical services in action

Our geotechnical services give clients the confidence and certainty to deliver complex projects while advancing sustainability and long-term resilience. Explore our projects below to see how we apply technical expertise and innovative solutions to manage ground risk and deliver successful outcomes.

Delivering the Riederwald Tunnel

Arcadis provided geotechnical consultancy for the Riederwald Tunnel project, developing the survey and investigation concept, producing subgrade and foundation reports, and building a large‑scale groundwater model to support planning and construction. These technical inputs helped manage complex soil and groundwater conditions for this major urban motorway link, contributing to reduced congestion, lower emissions, and improved mobility for commuters and residents.

WestConnex NSW’s Largest Urban Transport Infrastructure

Arcadis supported the WestConnex motorway programme with civil, structural, and geotechnical design services on key motorway components, including tunnel and interchange structures. Our work helped address challenging subsurface conditions and design requirements in a dense urban environment, supporting improved travel times, increased traffic capacity, and better connectivity for Sydney’s growing population.

Arcadis Appointed as Agent Welsh Road Project

Arcadis was appointed as Employer’s Agent and technical advisor for the A483 Llandeilo and Ffairfach improvements scheme by the Welsh Government. In this role, we are providing technical assurance on highways, structures, geotechnical, and environmental aspects during the design development and statutory phases. The project aims to reduce traffic through town centres and improve safety and accessibility for local communities.
