Civil engineering expertise for complex infrastructure

Turning ambitious master plans into resilient, real-world outcomes requires both technical precision and sustainable foresight. Our civil engineering teams combine human expertise with data-driven technology to design and deliver infrastructure that supports long-term growth, protects communities, and improves quality of life.

Future-proofing critical infrastructure and urban development

The infrastructure connecting our world—from transportation networks and bridges to vital water systems—forms the foundation of modern society. Legacy assets, urbanization, and climate risks create vulnerabilities such as congestion and flood exposure. Addressed through sustainable design, these pressures also create opportunities to revitalize urban spaces and strengthen resilience.

Aligning diverse stakeholder requirements with technical precision is essential for site development. Civil engineers bridge architectural master planning and the realities of under- and above-ground infrastructure, ensuring high-level visions are buildable and functional. We integrate environmental, regulatory, and operational insights to support economic growth while safeguarding the natural resources that communities depend on.

Fragmentation between concept, engineering, and delivery creates commercial risk and slows project momentum. A clearer understanding of site conditions and water management from the outset ensures development is reliable, fit-for-purpose, and future-ready.

Civil engineering expertise across industries

Our global projects demonstrate how we turn ambitious engineering concepts into resilient infrastructure outcomes. By combining human expertise with data-informed precision, we deliver designs that create lasting value and protect communities.

Accelerating connectivity with the Albion Park Rail bypass

To deliver the 9.8-kilometer Albion Park Rail bypass, we addressed a $630 million infrastructure gap reconnecting communities and freight corridors along Australia’s Highway One. Our team transformed a multi-month design process into a focused 10-week global collaboration, delivering significantly faster than conventional timelines. Using an integrated digital geographic information system, we identified environmental and utility conflicts early in concept development.

This proactive approach reduced construction risk and bypassed 16 congested intersections, cutting peak travel times by 65%. The result is a route designed to remain operational during annual flooding, strengthening regional connectivity, and improving quality of life for the local community.

Battery Park City Resiliency Project – New York, USA

Arcadis serves as the lead design and engineering consultant for the $1.7 billion Battery Park City Resiliency Project, delivering Lower Manhattan’s major coastal flood defense system. The project includes approximately 1.5 miles of permanent flood walls, deployable barriers, upgraded drainage infrastructure, and public space enhancements. Our leadership ensures the system is fully integrated, protecting waterfront communities from storm surge, sea-level rise, and extreme weather, while strengthening urban resilience and improving public amenities.

WestConnex Rozelle Interchange – Sydney, Australia

Arcadis provided civil, structural, and geotechnical design services for the Rozelle Interchange, part of Sydney’s WestConnex motorway programme. Our work addressed complex underground and surface conditions, ensuring safe and efficient construction in a dense urban environment. The project improved traffic capacity, reduced congestion, and enhanced connectivity for commuters, while minimizing disruption to surrounding communities and supporting the delivery of new public spaces above the tunnels.
