The Princes Motorway is part of Australia’s Highway One network and connects the cities of Sydney and Bomaderry. Freight, tourists, and local traffic all share this section near the Albion Park Rail, causing frequent congestion, especially during peak hours. On top of that, a planned extensive residential development over the next 30 years is expected to worsen traffic conditions and further reduce road efficiency. This led TfNSW to launch a $630 million bypass project to seamlessly connect Sydney to the south coast through improved road infrastructure.
Arcadis collaborated with Cardno in a joint venture to develop traffic congestion solutions for TfNSW, including highway design, environmental assessment, and site investigations for the 9.8-kilometer Albion Park Rail bypass. We used an online GIS platform to expedite the early phase and share designs within an ambitious 10-week timeline. The GIS portal also enabled effective data collection, providing accurate analysis and solutions.
The Albion Park Rail bypass enables road users to skip six sets of traffic lights and 16 intersections between Heathcote and Bomaderry, cutting travel time and reducing vehicular accident risks by six times. Morning northbound travel times will be reduced by up to 65%, with similar improvements for the southbound traffic during afternoon peak hours. Additionally, the project mitigates the impact of annual flooding on the roads by providing an alternative route to the existing Princes Motorway, replacing a section of the Illawarra Highway most affected by flooding.
With these improvements, TfNSW will be ready for increaseed road demand drive by the planned greenfield development in the area in the coming decades.
