Challenge

Traffic and transit conditions are constantly changing, and as a traveler, it can be difficult to navigate your route without the most up-to-date information on your planned path. To address and disseminate traffic information quickly and accurately, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) sought a digital web and mobile interface that could integrate real-time information and be accessible to residents, travelers, and tourists of New York. The goal was a robust transportation data system to support traffic management and traveler safety.

Solution

Since 2014, Arcadis, formerly Arcadis IBI Group, has delivered and continues to provide NYSDOT with a hosted environment that incorporates state-of-the-art data feed management. This robust solution includes data fusion services, IVR and web, mobile web, and mobile applications.

NYSDOT’s 511 travel information system includes a map service that feeds spatial data to the full range of 511NY solution offerings. The map service provides routing, geospatial referencing, and integration with ESRI and ArcGIS.

Impact

New York State’s 511 services aim to meet the specialized needs of commuters, long-distance travelers, tourists, and commercial vehicle operators. By providing a resource for trip planning, traffic conditions, weather updates, and alternative transportation information, 511NY helps users travel safely. The platform’s real-time updates allow users to make decisions about travel plans before and during transit to avoid congestion, inclement weather, and road closures, ultimately improving their travel experience.
