The challenge

In 2017, the government of the Brussels-Capital Region put the redevelopment of the Sainctelette-Yser neighborhood out to tender; the area in question is the intersection of Boulevard d'Anvers and Boulevard Baudouin. It is an asymmetric intersection at which different roads and road users converge. Sainctelette was also named the city's most dangerous intersection by Brussels residents. The new design aims to transform the neighborhood into a livable, safe environment for cyclists and pedestrians.

The solution

Living and Meeting

The tender was won by AgenceTer-Karbon; the agency was appointed alongside Arcadis to manage this project. Creating space for living and meeting is the common thread running through the plans. For example, the wide and unused green central reservation near the new Kanal cultural temple will disappear and will make way for a vast square. The double bridge over the canal that brings Brussels-City and Molenbeek closer to each other will be widened on both sides to create an esplanade for pedestrians. Under the bridge, cyclists following the canal cycle path will have their own crossing, so they no longer need to cross the Kleine Ring.

The impact

Start-Up

We are making Brussels into a city in which it is pleasant to walk and cycle, with a transport infrastructure that meets the needs of tomorrow. The new design gives Sainctelette-Yser the transformation it needs and will contribute to sustainable mobility.

The construction permits were submitted at the end of 2019, with work scheduled to start in 2020.
