Atlanta area drivers already spend more than 70 hours a year stuck behind the wheel. With thousands of fans expected to head to the stadium, frustrated commuters were left wondering, where are all these cars going to go?

Cobb County has been an Arcadis client for more than half a century. Arcadis employees are constantly building relationships at all levels of the organization. But relationships are just part of serving a client – we must create a positive experience for them and we have to be able to deliver in critical situations.

Our traffic modelling expertise and our positive history with the County made Arcadis uniquely qualified to help develop a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) for the Braves new stadium, SunTrust Park. Our commitment to delivering successful projects for the County is another reason they consider Arcadis a partner rather than a consultant.

FINDING A SOLUTION

Arcadis was under a tight deadline. Opening day against the San Diego Padres was scheduled for April 14, and the parking lots at SunTrust Park were under construction until the middle of February. As game day approached, public opinion remained skeptical. SunTrust Park is part of a larger development project, The Battery Atlanta. The Battery is a mixed-use destination that encompasses the ball park, a hotel, restaurants, new residences and many entertainment venues. It’s expected to draw lots of attention, and lots of traffic, on a regular basis.

To tackle the county’s traffic woes, Arcadis teamed with the Cobb County Department of Transportation, the Cobb County Police Department, the Atlanta Braves, Uber and LAZ Parking to deliver the TMP. The plan moves pedestrians and drivers in and out of the park as efficiently as possible and reduces traffic congestion in the surrounding area. It will be updated throughout the season.

“[This project] gave us the opportunity to help one of our long-time clients achieve success during a time when a lot of people were looking for them to fail.”

– Jody Peace, Project Manager

Fourteen access points provide entry to the stadium area once drivers exit highways US 41, I-285 and I-75. Parking lots are located in four different zones, each one closest to the driver’s direction. A Regional Transportation Management Center (TMC), along with a satellite TMC actually located within SunTrust Park, monitors traffic surrounding the ballpark where more than 200 traffic cameras are positioned to observe lane activity and ensure quick response.

If traffic begins to queue up at one of 70+ traffic signals in the vicinity of the ballpark, an adaptive control system adjusts the signals to control the flow of traffic. The WAZE app provides drivers with real-time traffic conditions so they can choose the best routes to the park as well as direct drivers to their parking lots (attendees buy a parking space when they buy a game ticket). Arcadis designed a similar app for Cobb County in 2015 called Cobb Commute.

JUST THE BEGINNING

Opening day was a success. Arcadis was onsite to assist the park with minor issues. But rather than experiencing more gridlock, Arcadis helped to make Cobb County and the Atlanta Braves opening night a successful commute for fans and the community.
