Embedding sustainability across the Crossrail West route
Our client’s challenge
The scale of the project, along with its multiple geographic locations, meant that there was a high risk of disturbance to the local area, both during construction and subsequently when the route is fully operational. However, one of the key priorities for Arcadis was to ensure minimal impact on the local community and on the biodiversity of the area.
Arcadis provided technical services and advice across ecology, acoustics, arboriculture, contaminated land, flood risk, cultural heritage, waste strategy and sustainability. We developed solutions that not only minimised the potential impact of construction, but also contributed to the development of the area by increasing biodiversity and providing additional opportunities for employment.
The result is that sustainability has been embedded throughout the project at all levels, with an interim CEEQUAL score of ‘Excellent’ being awarded in December 2016.
Improving quality of life
By working alongside the design teams, Arcadis was able to ensure that designs were adapted to address the challenges of the local environment. We also worked alongside the site teams to complete pre-construction surveys for protected species, invasive species and buried archaeology. In many cases, we were able to develop strategies to remediate or protect these sensitive areas, whilst still contributing to biodiversity targets.
The world is a complex place, Arcadis helps you navigate this complexity by understanding the bigger picture.
Arcadis is committed to providing a healthy and safe working environment for all our employees.
