Environmental construction, decommissioning, and demolition services

Inactive facilities and surplus properties pose regulatory, financial, and environmental risks—but with the right strategy, they can also create opportunity. We integrate specialized deactivation, decommissioning, decontamination, and demolition services with end-to-end construction and site management to reduce risk and control costs. Our environmental construction, management, and demolition team prepares sites for safe, viable redevelopment, addressing complex conditions with practical solutions.

Transitioning surplus properties from liabilities to assets

Surplus facilities can create risk on multiple fronts—regulatory compliance, fire hazards, vandalism, remediation obligations, and ongoing costs such as insurance, taxes, and utilities. These pressures can also affect public and shareholder perception.
With the right strategy and proactive management, however, underperforming sites can be safely decommissioned, remediated, and repositioned for future use.

From strategy to real-world results

At Arcadis, we help clients reduce risk and unlock value from complex, underperforming sites. Through practical, end-to-end solutions in environmental construction and deactivation through demolition, we safely manage liabilities, clean up sites, and prepare them for sustainable future use.

From fossil fuels to green fields: reclaiming the Dutch landscape

We led the above-ground decommissioning of 350 Dutch gas sites, restoring industrial land for safe agricultural use. Working with regional stakeholders, we also evaluated and implemented opportunities to convert selected locations into sustainable energy hubs. Where viable, solar installations and heat networks were integrated, supporting the Netherlands’ energy transition while returning land to productive use.

Ensdorf coal‑fired power plant remediation, Germany

Arcadis managed the complex remediation, dismantling, and site preparation of the 53‑hectare former Ensdorf coal‑fired power plant in Saarland. Our work included pollutant cleanup, deconstruction planning, and recycling of materials, preparing the site for sustainable redevelopment.

This remediated site now enables redevelopment for advanced industrial use, supporting semiconductor and mobility technologies and contributing to regional economic growth.

Our people

With new buildings, we are already considering how materials can be reused at the end of their useful life. Increasing reuse across existing structures will be essential to making better use of the resources we have.
