Asset Management

Optimizing infrastructure assets across the lifecycle
Built assets are essential to daily life, from the transportation we use and buildings we work in, to the systems delivering water and power. Their uninterrupted service is critical, yet today’s assets face mounting pressures from climate change, aging infrastructure, and urgent decarbonization needs. When these systems fail or underperform, the consequences are severe.
Effective asset management services are vital to managing these risks and ensuring long-term performance and value. Arcadis leads the industry, helping clients optimize asset performance at every lifecycle stage, from planning and creation to maintenance and operation.
Optimizing infrastructure asset planning and operations
Managing today’s assets is a major challenge. Organizations must balance construction costs (CAPEX) and long-term infrastructure health. Relying solely on asset age or allowing independent decision-making by teams is insufficient; a more flexible, data-driven approach is required for ongoing success.
Leaders face a complex web of interconnected challenges:
- Financial inefficiency: Focusing only on CAPEX is flawed. For many assets, operating expenses (OPEX) can account for 75% to 85% of the total lifecycle cost.
- Operational risk: Age-based replacement policies are highly ineffective. For example, in water utilities, some of the oldest pipes are not the worst performing, leading to wasted resources and leaving critical systems vulnerable.
- Aging infrastructure: In the industrial sector, aging infrastructure is a primary concern. A survey of facility leaders found 77% experience infrastructure failure impacting operational production at least once every six months.
- Data distress: Asset owners must navigate an environment of siloed, inconsistent, and unstructured data, which hinders decision-making. Customer expectations for better service persist, despite ongoing disruption and fragmented supply chains.
- Rising expectations and integration: There is increasing pressure for assets to deliver superior service while managing disruption. Integrating fragmented supply chains more closely with client organizations improves affordability.
- Workforce and regulatory shifts: Organizations struggle to attract and retain skilled talent, leading to undocumented institutional knowledge and an aging workforce. Regulatory requirements are also increasing scrutiny on expenditure and performance.
- Investment and climate pressures: Investment gaps, climate risks, and evolving global standards like ISO 55000 make it difficult for organizations to mature asset management capabilities and unlock full portfolio value.
This siloed model creates unacceptable risk and fails to unlock the full asset lifecycle value. A fundamental shift is necessary to manage 21st-century infrastructure.
