Challenge

It’s the home of football. It's where the atom was split. It’s consistently voted best UK city to live in. Manchester is a historical, economic powerhouse, and developing strong infrastructure and transport links will help drive economic growth across the rest of the country. Manchester doesn’t need any more great reasons to visit, but travelers need an airport passenger experience worthy of the city's reputation.

That’s why Arcadis is involved in the £1 billion Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, which includes the construction of an 85,000-square-meter extension to Terminal 2, reconfiguring the existing 87,000-square-meter Terminal 1 building and constructing three 11,000-square-meter piers, all allowing Terminal 2 to become the airport’s primary terminal building to cater to increased demand and an expanding flight schedule.

Solution

To make the most impact on traveler experience at Manchester Airport, we put ourselves in the shoes of each of the 35 million passengers expected to pass through the airport.

What would make their journey easier and more comfortable? What would make their waiting periods and transfers less frustrating? What little details about the airport would they notice or appreciate?

That’s what we continually focus on at Arcadis. Our plans for the airport transformation project include lounge areas designed for maximum flexibility, a new car park for 3,800 vehicles, a road network equipped to cope with rising traffic volumes, and smooth check-in and security facilities to help relieve passenger stress before flying.

Impact

In short, it is gratifying, inspirational, and endurance-building. The sheer scale and scope of this nine-year transformation, with almost 50 enhancements across Manchester Airport, is not for the inexperienced or the impatient. It is a complex and ambitious project, but what keeps us going is the certainty that the outcome will be a legacy that Manchester's residents and tourists will enjoy for generations.

Under our expertise, we are now four years into this transformation project and have successfully transitioned into a stage where over £500 million of works are currently under construction.
