Safety is essential to the future of connected and automated mobility (CAM). To deploy self-driving vehicles at scale, developers and regulators need robust evidence that these technologies can perform safely across everyday road conditions and less common, safety-critical scenarios. Physical testing alone cannot provide that evidence quickly, cost-effectively, or safely. Virtual testing in simulated environments is therefore critical to advancing CAM.
Testing providers already offer simulation tools for specific needs. But as CAM developers and future regulators look for more flexible, comprehensive testing services, they need a clearer way to choose and connect the right solutions. This is the challenge interoperable simulation helps solve.
Zenzic was established by government and industry to support the UK’s CAM ecosystem and accelerate the safe development of self-driving technologies. Arcadis and Reed Mobility were appointed by Zenzic to develop a roadmap for interoperable CAM simulation, building on a proof-of-concept demonstrator delivered by CAM Testbed UK as part of a parallel strand of the project.
Arcadis led the roadmap, which set out the market strategy, operating model, and investment case for a distributed simulation capability. The goal was to help CAM Testbed UK create a collaborative, interoperable platform for testing, certifying, and validating CAM solutions.
Interoperable simulation can help CAM developers and regulators validate self-driving technologies more efficiently, reducing barriers to safe deployment. With human error a factor in 95% of road accidents, accelerating reliable testing and validation could play an important role in making roads safer.
