Smarter Roads is a five-year, AUD340 million Victorian Government program to improve transport movement on the arterial roads. Investments include an additional 730 traffic cameras to monitor traffic operations, 260 travel time sensors to provide reliable information on road incidents and disruptions, 42 electronic message signs to offer real-time travel updates, and 75 dynamic pedestrian crossing sensors to increase safety. Expanding the capacity of Victoria’s road network through intelligent transport technology is urgently required to meet the state’s population growth, especially in Metropolitan Melbourne, which is driving increased demand for vehicles, pedestrians, and public transport.
Arcadis is supporting the Smarter Roads program by providing the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) with rapid-response specialist support services. This approach ensures that both human and technological interventions are informed in real time using our global design and transport technology solutions.
Smarter Roads focuses on improving the quality of life for Victorians while promoting a cleaner and safer environment. DTP is installing 75 pedestrian detectors to prevent unnecessary wait times, improve safety, and balance pedestrian and vehicle demand at busy crossings. DTP is also launching modern air-quality roadside stations to measure particulate matter, greenhouse gases, noise, and meteorology at seven locations across Melbourne, reinforcing this program as a human-centered transport initiative.
The Smarter Roads program strengthens both frontline and back-office support teams by adapting intelligent transport technologies to support road network operations. As a transformational program of works across infrastructure, resources, and processes, it delivers a step change for safer, smoother, and more coordinated movement across Victoria’s roads. The project will build capability and resilience to utilize new and supplementary data streams, delivering enhanced situational awareness of the road network and enabling positive change in the way goods and people move throughout Victoria.
