The challenge

Melbourne is growing, but more trains cannot run in and out of the city because the City Loop is nearing capacity. To maintain a high quality of life in Australia’s fastest growing city, Melbournians needed a new way of moving around their city.

The solution

Arcadis is working with consortium CYP Design and Construction (CYP D&C) (led by Lendlease, John Holland and Bouygues) to deliver the Tunnels and Stations package of the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project, Victoria’s biggest ever public transport infrastructure project.

In a joint venture with Arup and WSP, Arcadis is delivering the detailed design to support CYP D&C to design and construct the Metro Tunnel’s twin 9km rail tunnels and five new underground stations.

This includes technical elements of civil engineering, structures, mechanical and electrical, rail infrastructure, fire and life safety engineering, security and blast assessment, pedestrian modeling, vertical transportation, specialist lighting, sustainability and digital solutions, as well as noise, vibration and acoustics.

The impact

The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in Melbourne’s west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south-east with high-capacity trains and five new underground stations. It will create capacity on the network to enable more than a half a million additional passengers per week across Melbourne’s train network to use the rail system during the peak periods.

The stations will also set a new benchmark in design, delivering five new architectural landmarks for Melbourne.
