Challenge

Far North Queensland’s Daintree region is world-renowned for its World Heritage-listed rainforest and unique biodiversity. Despite its status as an environmental treasure, the community has long relied on diesel generators for power, creating multiple threats in the area. A more resilient energy system, such as a microgrid, is urgently needed especially in areas with limited infrastructure.

Why remote communities face unique energy challenges

Remote communities like Daintree are typically isolated from national or regional power grids. Alternative energy measures such as solar panels can be unstable and ineffective due to disruptions from weather fluctuations. Without reliable power supply connections, residents depend on small diesel generators, which are expensive, polluting, and prone to frequent outages. In Daintree alone, over four million liters of diesel are burned each year, contributing to declining air quality, poor health, and environmental degradation.

Solution

What is a renewable energy microgrid?

A renewable energy microgrid is a self-contained system that combines renewable power generation, such as solar, with battery storage and advanced control technologies to provide reliable electricity, either alone or alongside the main grid. These systems are particularly valuable in remote communities, where traditional grid connections are costly or infeasible and where maximizing energy resilience can protect residents from prolonged outages.

Impact

Environmental and community benefits

The Daintree Microgrid is a transformative project for the Australian renewable energy sector and regional communities.

It will protect the natural environment by significantly reducing diesel usage, lowering emissions, and preserving the rainforest’s ecology. It will also provide up to eight megawatts of power to over 300 residential customers and multiple tourist accommodation facilities, coming to 9.6 gigawatt hours a year, at a much lower cost.

This project is really exciting for the Arcadis team in that it's a great step in the right direction for sustainable energy in Australia, and it really hits our core capabilities around enabling renewable and sustainable energy. This project, once completed, will provide a hundred percent renewable, sustainable energy for the people, residents and businesses within the Daintree region. This project is really a shining example for Australia and the globe of what are a hundred percent renewable micro grid can look like.
