To meet future air traffic growth and maintain Hong Kong's competitiveness as an international aviation hub, the Airport Authority will expand Hong Kong International Airport into a three-runway system. With a long-term working relationship, Arcadis Hong Kong’s Infrastructure Team has been appointed as a cost management consultant for the Cost Planning for Initial Scheme Design and Scheme Design Stages for the Three-Runway System Land Formation, Infrastructure, Concourse and Terminal 2 Expansion.
A central feature of the Third Runway is a new passenger building that is traveler-centric, hi-tech and environmentally friendly. The Third Runway Passenger Building will provide 57 parking positions and handle 30 million passengers per annum. The design of the Third Runway Passenger Building balances operational efficiency with the commitment to being one of the world’s greenest airports. It boasts many green features and a courtyard at the centre of the passenger building, where its lush green lawn and groves of trees offer a tranquil setting for relaxation and enjoyment. Spanning a floor area of around 283,000 square metres, the spacious passenger building will offer departure and arrival passengers a green environment with plenty of natural sunlight, exquisite shopping experience and a wide array of dining options.
Land Formation for Third Runway System. The project will create new land north of the existing north runway (approximately 650 ha). The land formation will adopt a non-dredging method to provide a platform for a third runway, a new passenger concourse, and all associated taxiways, aprons and airport infrastructure. Upon the completion of the Third Runway, Hong Kong International Airport will be able to serve 30 million additional passengers annually as forecasted in the Hong Kong International Airport Master Plan 2030. The passenger building facilities of the Third Runway could be further expanded if necessary.
