Spatial exploration of the IJsselmeer region

Spatial exploration of the IJsselmeer region started recently. A consortium of companies including Arcadis, One Architecture and Smartland Landscape Architects will start work on behalf of the Bestuurlijk Platform IJsselmeergebied (IJsselmeer Region Administrative Platform) to create a deliberation framework for the future of the IJsselmeer region. The companies will answer the question of what opportunities, obstacles, options and restrictions apply where, when and why.

The region presents many different challenges, including ecological development, energy generation, urbanization, recreation and climate change. The exploration provides an insight into the connection between these different challenges. It shows how they complement or conflict with each other.

The framework will also offer tools for making choices. After all, it's not possible to have everything, everywhere, all the time. The approach focuses on what is known as design-based research. This method makes the task visual and therefore more concrete. Map material provides an insight into how projects complement each other or work against each other. It shows how certain choices and subsequent (future) directions taken within the IJsselmeer region can influence other developments and therefore other stakeholders.

The design-based research will contribute to the creation of a deliberation framework: a steering wheel to navigate the network of wider challenges.
