Urban regeneration in Birmingham: transforming lives and neighborhoods
Perry Barr is a suburb in Northwest Birmingham, well connected, and only four miles from the city center.
It is a vibrant, diverse community where 46% of residents are below 30 and 60% are BAME (Black, Asian, and minority ethnic). However, due to a historic lack of investment, it suffers from high levels of deprivation, unemployment, poor educational attainment, and poor housing stock.
Birmingham City Council (BCC) seized the opportunity to accelerate a £500 million urban regeneration masterplan for the vital transformation of Perry Barr. Arcadis was appointed by BCC as lead consultant, providing multidisciplinary services. The initiative aims to create an exemplary urban neighborhood with expanded multi-purpose green spaces, sustainable infrastructure, and inclusive design.
The legacy of Perry Barr’s regeneration is rooted in delivering a healthy, high-quality living environment for all ages with affordable and sustainable housing, improved connectivity, and better access to employment opportunities. It’s a model for community regeneration that addresses both social equity and environmental resilience.
